Who: Millard Fillmore
Quote: “Honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory.”
Source: After Millard Fillmore was nominated as the Whig candidate for Governor of New York State, he gave a speech in Buffalo, New York. In that speech he implored his supporters to run a clean political campaign.
“So that the joy and happiness that they might experience, won’t be marred by an unworth or dishonorable reflection…He entreated them to enter the contest with zeal and enthusiasm; but as they valued the sacredness of their cause, and the stability of their principles, to resort to no unfair means: that an honorable defeat was better than a dishonorable victory.”
